Thomas Sladic Obituary

Thomas S. Sladic, age 71, of the North Side passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Beloved Husband of nearly 45 years to Kathleen E. (Kress) Sladic. Son of the late Michael and Josephine (Cochinella) Sladic. Beloved Father of Sarah J. (Mark) Sladic-Carothers and Grandfather of Christian Carothers. Brother of Michael Sladic, Mary Sladic-Crooks, and Gerald (Barbara) Sladic, as well as a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Thomas (Tom) was born on December 6, 1953.  After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served our nation as a parachute rigger in a special forces unit attached to the 82nd Airborne Division.  His family enjoyed hearing stories of the typical Sladic hijinks that he employed even during his years of service.

After his time in the military, Tom began his trade as a plumber.  Through his hard work and dedication to his craft, Tom established his reputation as one of the most reliable and very best service plumbers in the area during his nearly 20 years of owning and operating his own plumbing shop and then an additional 10+ years as a Allegheny County plumbing inspector.  Tom had a rigid sense of doing things the right way, and that showed in his work.  This dedication to getting things right also fed his enjoyment of taking care of his home of over forty years through various projects; nothing was ever completed and everything could always be improved.  He would frequently take this work ethic and craftsmanship on the road to DC, Virginia, and Maryland to also improve the homes of his daughter, Sarah, and her family.  Overall, he also enjoyed bragging about his daughter graduating at the top of her engineering and law school classes, becoming a successful patent attorney in Washington, D.C., and creating a beautiful home for her lovely family with her husband, Mark.  While not always vocal with his feelings, he clearly showed his love for others through his willingness to drop everything and provide his plumbing and handyman expertise to anyone in need, especially his daughter and her family.

His trips south also included the added bonus of spending time with his grandson, Christian, who Tom adored.  Tom was the ideal doting, loving, and supportive "Pap." He regularly expressed that his times spent with Christian were his favorite times.  His highlights were the opportunities to spoil Christian at their annual Penguins game in December and the abundance of snacks and candy he kept in the “snack store” for Christian in his basement.  Tom would also make the trip to Maryland to watch Christian’s baseball games and celebrate his birthday in September each year.

Outside of work and family, Tom relaxed by riding his motorcycle and listening to music.  He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and a previous Steelers and Penguins season ticket holder for many years.
