James L. Lowe

Jim "Coach" Lowe, a steadfast man of faith who loved and cherished his family, a beloved teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Born on May 13, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Jim lived a life dedicated to family, sports, teaching, and service to others.

Jim attended Eastern Kentucky University on a football scholarship and graduated with a teaching degree followed by obtaining a master’s degree in business and physical education from Xavier University. His passion for education led him to a career spanning several decades as a Phys Ed and business law and ethics high school teacher. He taught in Florida, at Little Miami High School in Ohio, and at Oliver and Taylor Allderdice High Schools in Pittsburgh. Jim had an extraordinary ability to connect with students from all backgrounds and abilities. His engaging teaching style made his classes a favorite among students especially those who struggled with school. 

In addition to his impact in the classroom, Jim was an accomplished coach. He is remembered for leading the Little Miami High School Girls' Softball team to the State Championship—a remarkable achievement made even more special by the fact that he personally built the softball field with his good friend Kern. This accomplishment earned him induction into the Little Miami Sports Hall of Fame because this was the first and only Girls’ Softball state championship.

Jim's love for sports extended beyond coaching. A lifelong athlete himself, he played football in high school and college and remained an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. His enthusiasm for sports was matched by his many hobbies. Jim enjoyed cooking for others—whether it was preparing meals for large groups at church or sharing his favorite recipes through personalized cookbooks he created each year. He also found joy in gardening, transforming his landscape into a beautiful showcase featured in the Brighton Heights Garden Tour. Additionally, woodworking, painting, puzzles, and other creative pursuits filled his days with purpose and fulfillment.

Faith was central to Jim's life. Raised Catholic as a youth, he later became a born-again Christian and was an active member of Allison Park Assembly of God and Bellevue Christian Churches where he served as a deacon, home group leader, and was always willing to volunteer no matter what was needed. Daily prayer, Bible study, and sharing his faith were integral parts of who he was.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Susan; his stepdaughters Jennifer and Renae (Eric Fossum); and his cherished grandchildren Elise, Rachel, Elliott, and Reid. He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas (Chip); his father Thomas; and his mother Mary.

Jim’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and unwavering faith. His influence as a teacher and coach touched countless lives over the years. His love of God and family was remarkable in every way. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, June 14th at O'Brien's Funeral Home at 3724 California Avenue with visitation from 1-4 PM followed by a funeral service presided over by Pastor Chuck Gohn.
