Carol Ann Rush, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2025 surrounded by her loving family, three days before what would have been her 78th birthday after battling Parkinson's disease. Born June 13, 1947, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Dorothy (Shaver) McCabe.
Carol was a respected leader in higher education administration and a microbiology professor prior to that. She earned her doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Pittsburgh; master's degree in microbiology and bachelor's degree in biology from Duquesne University. She was a mentor to both her colleagues and students, as well as a lifelong advocate for women, encouraging them to become the future of science and technology. She served on many community boards and programs with a passion to improve education. She believed that with hard work and a sense of humor, you could achieve anything. Carol spent time each day knitting sweaters and scarves, which she called her therapy.
Beloved wife of John Patrick Rush; Proud mother of four daughters: Jennifer Ann Bennett of Ohio, Julie Ann (Michael) Badamo, Jill Ann (Eric) Barnabei and Janice Patricia (Shawn) McClure; Loving grandmother of Jessica Lubarsky; Brendan and Connor Bennett; Alex, Lucas, and Andrew Barnabei; Henry and Lena McClure. Sister of the late James A. Jr. (Kathy) McCabe. Dear cousin of the late James Rounce Jr. (Eileene; children Gail and Jim Rounce) and aunt and great-aunt to several nieces and nephews.
